Houston Falls to No. 7 ECU at The American Championship

CLEARWATER, Fla.-- The University of Houston Baseball team fell 13-2 to No. 7 ECU in an elimination game at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Spectrum Field.

With the decision, the Cougars move to 32-24 on the season, while the Pirates improve to 43-14 overall.

KEY INNINGS
1st | ECU scored one in the opening frame.

2nd | Sophomore second baseman Brad Burckel came home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

3rd | The Pirates scored three runs on back-to-back home runs in the third.

6th | ECU added five runs (three earned) in the sixth.

7th | The Pirates hit a solo home run to leadoff the seventh.

8th | Houston added a run in the eighth. Junior third baseman Jared Triolo doubled to leadoff the bottom frame. In the next at-bat, Triolo advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a RBI groundout from junior center fielder Tyler Bielamowicz.

9th | ECU scored three runs in the top of the ninth for the 13-2 final.

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Triolo finished 2-for-3 with one double and one run scored.
• Junior right fielder Lael Lockhart Jr. went 2-for-4 with a double.
• Bielamowicz was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry finished 1-for-3.
• Senior Grayson Padgett (1-for-1) and redshirt freshman Ian McMillan (1-for-2) each recorded singles coming off the bench.

Pitching:
• Sophomore southpaw Clay Aguilar (6-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) across three and two-third innings in the start.
• Cougars Devon Roedahl (2.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER), Brayson Hurdsman (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER) and Nolan Bond (0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER) combined to finish the game.
