Houston Shuts Out UCF to Even Series

Joe Davis hits two-out, two-run home run in seventh inning
ORLANDO, Fla.-- The University of Houston Baseball team shut out UCF, 2-0, on Friday night at John Euliano Park.
With the win, the Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Top 30 poll as well as the USA Today Coaches Poll, even the series and improve to 32-21 on the season and 12-11 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Knights move to 33-20 and 10-13 in league action.
KEY INNINGS
7th | Senior first baseman Joe Davis broke up the pitcher's duel with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis' home run highlighted a 2-for-3 effort. He also singled and was intentionally walked twice. The home run was his 17th of the season, breaking a tie with Mark Grimes (1985), Omar Brewer (1987), Goefrey Tomlinson (1997) and Matt Weston (2006) for fifth all-time at Houston in a single season.
• Freshman second baseman Brad Burckel recorded two singles in a 2-for-5 showing.
• Junior shortstop Kobe Hyland and sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace each went 1-for-4 with a single.
Pitching:
• Junior right-hander Sean Bretz (2-1) picked up his second win of the season. Bretz tossed scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth. He allowed just one hit with two walks and one strikeout.
• Sophomore southpaw Clay Aguilar went four innings in the start. He worked around five hits and three walks while striking out six.
• • Junior Fred Villarreal logged the final three innings of one-hit baseball to record his 10th save. His 10 saves ties Jessie Crain (2002) for eighth all-time at Houston in a single season.

The Cougars and Knights will close out the regular season with a 5 p.m. CT runner game on Saturday.
