Rehr Adds Gerwig to Coaching Staff

Gerwig will handle outside hitter and middle blockers
HOUSTON – Brian Gerwig has joined the University of Houston Volleyball staff, Head Coach David Rehr announced Wednesday.

A graduate of Western Kentucky, Gerwig comes to Houston after spending the previous two seasons with Rehr at Arkansas State. His main responsibility with the Cougars will be recruiting future student-athletes to Houston. He will also assist with the training of middle blockers and outside attackers and the scouting of opponents.

During his time with the Red Wolves, Gerwig helped guide A-State to a combined record of 40-26 and the Red Wolves' fourth-straight 20-win season in his first year. Under Gerwig's direction, that same season found A-State sit third in the Sun Belt with 261 total blocks.

2017 also saw the Red Wolves slam home 1,658 total kills, a mark that ranked third in the conference and 36th in the nation. Behind a .219 team hitting percentage, Gerwig's offensive schemes led to 13.59 kills per set, which ranked second in the Sun Belt.

Prior to his time with A-State, Gerwig spent four seasons as an assistant coach at George Washington, where the Colonials racked in 70 wins during that time period, including back-to-back 20-win seasons from 2014-15. While with the Colonials, Gerwig's responsibilities included scouting and game planning.

Gerwig helped GW post a 10-4 mark in Atlantic 10 play in 2013, which were the most league wins for the school since 2002. That 2013 season also found GW win its first conference tournament match since 2006. With the help of Gerwig, the Colonials posted a 22-8 mark in 2014, including an 11-3 record in conference play and the program's first appearance in the conference tournament championship since 2002.

Before his tenure at GW, Gerwig served as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Kentucky in 2012, which turned out the be the Lady Toppers' most successful season in program history with their 33-4 record. With his focus primarily on defense and middle blockers, Gerwig helped coach a pair of All-Americans and the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
