Houston Splits Marathon Doubleheader vs. Tulane

Cougars close series, 2019 home slate at 2 p.m. Sunday
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team split its doubleheader with Tulane, winning 12-7 in regulation and falling 9-7 in 10 innings, wrapping in the early a.m. Sunday morning at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decisions, the Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Top 30 poll, move to 30-19 on the season and 10-10 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave moves to 29-21 overall and 11-8 in league action.
HOUSTON 12, TULANE 7
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston stuck first with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior third baseman Jared Triolo singled to third to open the frame. After stealing second base, Triolo moved station to station on a pair of groundouts off the bats of freshman second baseman Brad Burckel and senior first baseman Joe Davis.
2nd | The Cougars added to their lead with a four-run second inning. Junior right fielder Tyler Bielamowicz singled to right center and senior left fielder Rey Fuentes III walked to put two on. Senior center fielder Grayson Padgett doubled home Bielamowicz with a ball into the left-center gap. Fuentes III followed scoring on a wild pitch. After a walk to junior shortstop Kobe Hyland and a strikeout, Triolo singled home Padgett. Hyland scored on a groundout in the next at-bat.
3rd | Tulane tied the game with five runs in the top of the third, but Houston responded with one run in the bottom frame on a leadoff home run to right field from freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry.
4th | The Green Wave scored one run in the fourth to knot things up at 6-6.
7th | Both teams pushed across one run in the seventh with Houston scoring on a Bielamowicz RBI single.
8th | The Cougars scored five runs in the eighth for the 12-7 final. In the inning, Houston got a two-RBI double from Triolo and a RBI single from Burckel, while Bielamowicz and Davis came home on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch, respectively.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Triolo finished 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base.
• Cherry also turned in a 3-for-5 effort, homering in the third inning.
• Hyland went 2-for-2 with a double, walk and run scored, while Bielamowicz was 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and one run scored.
• Burckel (1-for-4, 2, RBI, 1 R, 1 SB), Davis (1-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 R) and Padgett (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 R) all recorded one hit apiece.
Pitching:
• Junior right-hander Fred Villarreal (5-2) picked up the win tossing the final two and one-third innings. Villarreal scattered two hits and recorded one strikeout in keeping Tulane at bay until Houston's five-run eighth inning.
• Junior Lael Lockhart Jr. was taxed for six runs (five earned) across three and one-third innings in the start.
• Junior Sean Bretz also went three and one-third innings pitching into the seventh before being lifted for Villarreal. He allowed one run.

TULANE 9, HOUSTON 7 (10 INN.)
KEY INNINGS
3rd | The Green Wave scored the first run of the nightcap on a sacrifice fly in the third.
4th | Padgett evened the game with a RBI double in the fourth.
5th | A bases-loaded walk to Cherry in the fifth scored Triolo.
6th | Tulane scored two runs in the sixth.
7th | A pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk to junior Blake Way delivered Davis to retie the game at 3-3.
8th | RBI base hits from Davis and Bielamowicz gave Houston a two-run edge at 5-3.
9th | The Green Wave scored two runs in the top of the ninth.
10th | Tulane scored four runs in the top of the 10th. The Cougars rallied with a two-RBI double from Padgett in the bottom frame for the 9-7 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Padgett (2-for-5, 1 2B, 3 RBI), Bielamowicz (2-for-5, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 R), Burckel (2-for-4, 2 BB) and Davis (2-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 R) each recorded two hits for Houston.
• Lovelace (1-for-6, 1 R) and Triolo (1-for-4, 2 BB, 2 R) both doubled.
Pitching:
• Villarreal (5-3) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs in the 10th inning.
• Sophomore Clay Aguilar got the start and pitched into the sixth. He surrendered three runs while walking four and striking out eight.
• Junior Devon Roedahl issued two runs over three and two-third innings out of the bullpen.
• Junior Brayson Hurdsman got the final two outs of the top of the 10th.

The Cougars will go for the series win in a 2 p.m. first pitch Sunday. The game marks the final home game of 2019 at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
