Houston Defeats Tulane, 5-2, on Senior Day to Clinch Series

Cougars close regular season vs. Rice in Sugar Land on Tuesday, series at UCF starting Thursday
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team defeated Tulane, 5-2, on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the win, the Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Top 30 poll, improve to 31-19 on the season and 11-10 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave moves to 29-22 overall and 11-9 in league action.
KEY INNINGS
3rd | Houston scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace and junior third baseman Jared Triolo each walked to open the bottom frame before moving up on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of freshman second baseman Brad Burckel. Freshman designated hitter Joe Davis scored the pair in the next at-bat with a single to center field.
7th | With two outs, senior center fielder Grayson Padgett singled to right center and junior shortstop Kobe Hyland doubled him home to add a run in the seventh.
8th | Tulane scored two runs in the top of the eighth, but the Cougars answered in the bottom frame. Singles from Triolo and freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry put runner at the corners. Junior right fielder Tyler Bielamowicz followed with a sacrifice bunt to deliver Triolo, before junior first baseman Lael Lockhart Jr. singled home Cherry for the 5-2 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Cherry turned in his second straight three-hit effort, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
• Lockhart Jr. turned in a 2-for-4 effort with one RBI.
• Triolo was 1-for-3 with one walk and two runs scored, while Padgett was 1-for-2 with one walk and one run scored.
• Hyland recorded an RBI double in the seventh inning in a 1-for-3 showing.
• Bielamowicz executed some small ball with an RBI sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning.
Pitching:
• Senior right-handers Ryan Randel and Nolan Bond combined to go the distance on Senior Day.
• Randel (4-2) picked up his fourth win of the season. He held the Green Wave scoreless for the first seven innings before being levied for two unearned runs in the eighth. Randel surrendered just three runs while walking three and striking out five over a career-long seven and one-third innings.
• Bond issued just one hit over the final five outs to record the first save of his career.
The Cougars, who are in the midst of sox straight games in the Houston area, will face Rice in the Silver Glove Series finale on Tuesday in a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas. After which, Houston will visit UCF in a three-game series starting Thursday to close the regular season.
