Houston Falls to Rice, 2-1, in Silver Glove Series Finale

SUGAR LAND, Texas-- The University of Houston Baseball team fell 2-1 to Rice on Tuesday night at Constellation Field.

With the decision, the Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Top 30 poll as well as the USA Today Coaches Poll, move to 31-20 on the season, while the Owls improve to 24-28 and claim the Silver Glove Series Trophy.

At the conclusion of the series, Houston's Nolan Bond, Brad Burckel, Derrick Cherry and Devon Roedahl were named to the All-Silver Glove Series Team.

KEY INNINGS
3rd | Rice struck first with one run on a RBI groundout in the top of the third.

4th | The Owls added another run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

5th | Junior right fielder Tyler Bielamowicz plated junior third baseman Jared Triolo with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth for the 2-1 final.

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Cherry turned in his third straight three-hit effort, finishing 3-for-3 with two walks.
• Burckel also walked twice with his coming in a 2-for-3 effort.
• Triolo finished 1-for-4 and came home on Bielamowicz's RBI sacrifice fly.

Pitching:
• Sophomore southpaw Jared Pettitte (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing both runs across three innings pitched.
• Senior Nolan Bond relieved Pettitte in the fourth and tossed two scoreless innings with one hit and one strikeout.
• Junior Brayson Hurdsman tossed three innings of scoreless relief, retiring the side in both the seventh and eighth innings. He allowed just one hit while striking out two.
• Junior Devon Roedahl worked around two walks for a scoreless ninth.

ON DECK
After six straight games in the Houston area, the Cougars return to American Athletic Conference play and close out the regular season with a three-game series at UCF starting Thursday.
