Cougars earn academic honor for fourth consecutive season
HOUSTON – For the fourth consecutive season, the University of Houston Women's Golf program received the NCAA Public Recognition Award, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
The accolade honors programs with Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of their respective sports through the 2017-18 academic year. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all NCAA Division I sport teams nationally
The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000. The Cougars were one of 1,214 teams to earn a perfect score.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 8. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
ABOUT the COUGARS
Wednesday's award was only the latest honor for the Cougars in 2018-19.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, Houston captured the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships title by a record 30 strokes for its third title in the last four years.
Chadwell was named the league's Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four years, while senior All-American Leonie Harm was named The American's Player of the Year for the second straight season. Senior Maddy Rayner and freshmen Maria Jose Martinez and Hannah Screen joined Harm on the All-American Athletic Conference Team.
Houston has had 34 student-athletes named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, including a school-record nine honorees in 2016-17 and 2017-18 with this year's selections being announced shortly after the 2018-19 academic year.
In addition, the Cougars have enjoyed eight Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars with three in each of the last two seasons.
