Women’s Golf Continues Play at NCAA Championships

Third Round tees off Sunday at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa
CARLSBAD, Calif. – University of Houston Women's Golf senior Natalie Saint Germain posted an even-par 72 to lead the Cougars during the NCAA Championships Second Round at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa on Saturday.After shooting a 77 in Friday's First Round, Saint Germain bettered that score by five strokes. The Prague native drained a pair of birdies through the first six holes of her second nine and was tied for 94th with a 36-hole total of 149 on the 6,271-yard, par-72 course.
As a team, #29 Houston recorded a score of 297 Saturday and stood in 24th with a two-day total of 591 five shots out of 15th place entering the Third Round.
Competing in her second straight NCAA Championships, senior Moa Svedenskiöld was tied for 46th at 146 while junior Maelynn Kim was tied for 81st at 148. Sophomore Emilia Väistö was tied for 109th at 150 while senior Alexa Saldana was tied for 143rd at 155.
#1 (1) Stanford held the Second-Round team lead at 564 to stand three shots ahead of #2 (2) USC. #21 (16) Oklahoma State was third at 569 with #17 (13) Iowa State (576), #7 (7) Arkansas (576), #16 (12) SMU (577), #10 (9) Duke (577), #5 (5) Texas (578), #27 (21) Eastern Michigan (581) and #23 (18) Arizona State (581) rounded out the Top 10.
#31 (23) Northwestern (582), #3 (3) Florida (582), #32 (24) Missouri (583), #11 (10) Pepperdine (585), #18 (14) Tennessee (586), #4 (4) Texas A&M (586) and #22 (17) Florida State completed the Top 15.The Top-15 teams and the Top-Nine individuals not on a Top-15 team advance to the Final Round of stroke play on Monday.
Individually, Texas's Farah O'Keefe, Mississippi's Kajsaloftta Svarvar and Meja Örtengren of Stanford stood atop the leaderboard at 6-under 138. Megha Ganne (Stanford), Beth Coulter (Arizona State) and Kirstin Angosta (TCU) were tied for fourth at 139 with five golfers checking in at 140.Isabella McCauley (Minnesota), Sheridan Clancy (Indiana) and Carys Worby (Auburn) finished Saturday's play with a score of 1-over 217 to stand as the 9th, 10th and 11th-place competitors not on a Top-15 team entering the Third Round.
The Third Round tees off at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) Sunday. The Cougars begin their day at 2:45 p.m. (CDT), Sunday.
The Cougars earned their first trip as a team to the NCAA Championships after finishing second at the NCAA Simpsonville Regional at Louisville Golf Club on May 11-13. Houston posted a team-score of 11-under 853, including a school-record-low 275 in NCAA Regional play in the Second Round, to punch their ticket to the nation's premier collegiate event.
FORMAT
All schools will play 18 holes each day through Sunday. Following the first three rounds, the Top-15 teams and Top-Nine individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the Final Round of stroke play.
The top individual following the Final Round of stroke play will be crowned the NCAA individual national champion.
The Top-Eight teams following the Final Round of stroke play advance to match play. The Match Play Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be held Tuesday, May 26 with the National Championship match beginning in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 27.

TEE TIMES
For Sunday's Third Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Virginia and LSU.
Saldaña begins the day off No. 1 at 2:45 p.m. (CDT) with Saint Germain (2:56 p.m. CDT), Väisto (3:07 p.m. CDT), Kim (3:18 p.m. CDT) and Svedenskiöld (3:29 p.m. CDT) following.

HOUSTON in NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
While this is the first time that Houston will compete as a team at the NCAA Championships, it's not the first time Houston has been represented at the nation's top collegiate tournament.
Svedenskiöld qualified as an individual from the NCAA Columbus Regional a year ago and will make her second appearance. All-American Karen Fredgaard tied for 28th as an individual at the 2021 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and became the first Cougar to compete in all four rounds of stroke play.
All-American Leonie Harm was the first Cougar to compete in multiple NCAA Championships, qualifying for the 2018 and 2016 events.
