Montgomery Takes Nation’s Top Spot in the 200

Houston records four top-10 national marks at home meet
HOUSTON – The indoor national runner-up in the 400-meter dash, Kahmari Montgomery made his 2019 individual outdoor debut Saturday at the Houston Alumni Invitational and clocked the nation's fastest 200-meter dash this season along with the No. 5 time in the 400.
Montgomery's times were two of four top-10 national marks for Houston on Saturday as Lagarious McQuirter moved to No. 6 in the long jump and Naomi Taylor moved to No 7 in the 100-meter hurdles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Montgomery quickly put his name atop the national list this season on Saturday, clocking a wind-aided time of 20.41 in the 200, besting the national best entering the weekend of 20.50 from North Carolina A&T's Akeem Sirleaf. Houston claimed a 1-2 finish in the event as Nicholas Alexander took second in a time of 20.76, a time that ranks No. 15 nationally and No. 2 in The American Athletic Conference.
Just one hour earlier, Montgomery made his 2019 outdoor debut in the 400 and claimed a win in the event, moving up to No. 5 in the nation with a time of 45.96. The time snapped the two-year old meet record of 47.55. Houston claimed the top four spots in the event as Montgomery was followed by Amere Lattin (46.79), Tyrell Valentine (47.31) and Jermaine Holt (47.70).
Taylor moved up to No. 7 in the nation and No. 1 in The American in the 100-meter hurdles as she claimed a win Saturday with a wind-aided time of 13.17. Whitney Ochiam moved to No. 6 in The American as she finished fourth with a time of 14.38.
McQuirter finished second overall but was first among collegiate competitors in the men's long jump, registering a top jump of 25-8.00 (7.82) with a tailwind of 4.0 meters per second to move to No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 in The American.
Samiyah Samuels took the top spot in The American in the women's long jump and moved to No. 14 in the nation after finishing second Saturday with a jump of 20-7.00 (6.27). Phedenia George-Mosbey finished one spot back in third with a PR of 19-6.00 (5.94) to move to No. 3 in The American this season.
Samuels then returned to the track for the 100-meter dash where she finished first among collegiate competitors with a time of 11.58, to move to No. 1 in The American this season. Samuels was joined on The American's performance list by Justice Henderson who clocked the conference's eighth-fastest time this season, 11.78.
It was a Houston sweep in the 100 as Mario Burke claimed a win on the men's side with a time of 10.07 with a 4.3 tailwind while Travis Collins took second in a time of 10.19. Running in the second heat with a legal tailwind, Alexander finished fifth overall and third among collegiate competitors with a wind-legal time of 10.35 to move to No. 2 on The American's performance list. Freshman Edward Sumler IV moved to No. 3 on The American's chart with a wind-legal time of 10.44 while Jordan Booker moved to No. 5 with a time of 10.45.
It was a Houston tie for first in the high jump as Brendon Rivera and Colin George both cleared 6-9.75 (2.08) to break a two-year old meet record. The pair move to No. 2 in The American this season with the height.
Houston swept the 4x100-meter relays as the women's A and B teams went 1-2 with times of 44.81 and 45.32, respectively, while the men clocked a time of 40.20.
Houston closed out the day like it started, with a sweep of the relays as the Houston women's 4x400-meter relay started first with a meet record of 3:49.79 before the Houston men's A team won its event with a meet record of 3:09.45 while the Houston B team was second in 3:10.42.
Triston Gibbons claimed a win in the shot put with a top throw of 57-2.00 (17.42).
Quivell Jordan moved to No. 2 in The American in the 110-meter hurdles as he finished second with a time of 14.17.
Ashley Seymour moved to No. 7 in The American as she took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.92.
Freshman Jemal Wote shaved eight seconds off his PR in the 1,500-meter run to win the event with a time of 4:00.45.
Erin Derrow claimed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.58.
Kenneth Sessums moved up to No. 5 in The American with a third-place finish in the discus, recording a top throw of 161-9 (49.30).
Olivia Winterkamp claimed a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 11-1.75 (3.40).
Freshman Regan Lobodzinski took third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:48.45.
Priscilla Adejokun moved up to No. 3 on the Houston's all-time list in the women's hammer throw with a PR of 184-2 (56.13). Houston's Taylor Scaife, competing unattached, hit a PR of 210-1 (64.04) to finish second behind Olympian Gwendolyn Berry.
Hailey Pollard took third in the discus with a throw of 149-5 (45.54). Houston's Nora Monie, competing unattached, hit a PR of 175-2 (53.40) to win the event and break a meet record.
Ben Percefull took third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-5.00 (4.70).
