Transfer guard from Idaho will sit out 2019-20 season with three years of eligibility starting in 2020-21
As an NCAA Division I transfer, Tyson must sit out the 2019-20 season but will practice daily with the Cougars. He will compete as a redshirt sophomore beginning with the 2020-21 season and have three years of eligibility remaining.
"Cameron is an outstanding young man, who fits our culture, on and off the court. He comes from a great family and can really shoot the basketball," Sampson said "I look forward to getting him to Houston and developing him."
ABOUT CAMERON TYSON
A native of Bothell, Wash., and product of Bothell High School, Tyson averaged 13.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game with Idaho during the 2018-19 season.
With 432 points, he broke the Idaho freshman scoring record. Tyson drained 42.9 percent of his 3-point tries (106-of-247) to set the Big Sky Conference record for 3-pointers made by a freshman and rank second in Idaho single-season history.
Tyson was an All-KingCo 4A First-Team selection as a senior after averaging 26.6 points per game during the 2017-18 season. He also averaged 5.0 rebounds and 4.4 rebounds per game in his final prep season and finished as the all-time leading scorer in Bothell High history.
Tyson will be one of five newcomers on Houston's 2019-20 roster. Freshman guard Caleb Mills joined the team at the semester break in January and sat out the second half of the season as a redshirt, while junior forward Justin Gorham sat out as a redshirt after transferring from Towson.
Houston also will be boosted by the addition of freshman forward J'Wan Roberts (Shoemaker High School) and freshman guard Marcus Sasser, who signed National Letters of Intent in November 2018.
