Cougars record season-high 18 hits in victory
ORLANDO, Fla. – Behind a pair of home runs and a season-high 18 hits, the University of Houston Softball team took down UCF by a score of 9-1 on Sunday to win its fourth conference series of the season.
With the victory, the Cougars improve their record to 34-16 on the year and 10-7 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Knights drop to 30-20 this season and 8-10 against league opponents. The win also cements Houston's second series win over UCF since moving to The American. The Cougars have now won nine of their past 11 contests.
Houston's offense went on a tear this afternoon, setting season-highs in hits (18) and extra-base hits (5). Along with the 18 hits, six different Cougars posted multiple hits in the game, which included a pair of three-hit outings and a 4-for-4 performance from senior outfielder Maya Thomas. Sunday's rubber match also saw the Cougars show off their clutch gene, batting .538 (7-for-13) with two outs on the day.
The four-hit outing from Thomas ties her career-high, which was set earlier this season at Memphis. Senior pitcher Savannah Heebner also tied her career-high with her three hits in the contest. Thomas and Heebner were joined by junior infielder Arielle James as those with three or more hits.
Junior infielders Sarah Queen and Kelli Montgomery both launched home runs. It was Queen's third long ball of the season, while Montgomery's solo shot was the second home run of her career.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Like they have so many times this season, the Cougars put runs up on the scoreboard early in the game, as a three-run blast from junior infielder Sarah Queen gave Houston a 3-0 advantage. Once senior outfielder Maya Thomas got the inning going with her bunt single, she stole second to put a runner in scoring position. After sophomore infielder Aspen Howie drew a two-out walk, Queen came up to the plate and sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall for her third home run of the season. The Knights responded in the bottom of the inning, as a run from UCF trimmed the Houston lead to two.
6th | After senior catcher Brooke Vannoy led the inning off with a single up the middle, senior Sarah Barker tripled her home to push the Cougar lead to 6-1. Following the first out of the inning, junior infielder Arielle James then sacrificed her at-bat to drive home Barker and extend the Houston advantage to seven. With two outs in the inning, junior Kelli Montgomery battled her way through to put the count in her favor, in which she took full advantage, blasting her first home run of the season for Houston's third run of the inning.
