Houston Sweeps Track Athletes of the Week

Birexus Hawkins and Amere Lattin claim honors
HOUSTON – Junior sprinter Birexus Hawkins and senior hurdler Amere Lattin have been named the American Athletic Conference Track Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Winning his third consecutive weekly conference honor, Lattin was named The Texas Relays Men's Performer of the Meet after claiming first in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. Lattin's time of 49.80 in the invitational 400 hurdles is the No. 1 time in the nation and No. 5 in the world this season.

Competing in one of the nation's most prestigious meets, Hawkins finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.04to jump to the No. 1 spot in The American, move up to No. 9 in the NCAA and record the third-fastest time in UH history. Hawkins also ran the opening leg of the 4x200-meter relay that finished second with a time of 1:34.58, the No. 11 time in the world this season.

For Houston, the awards are the third and fourth of the outdoor slate and give Houston 15 total weekly awards this season.

The Cougars return home to host the Houston Alumni Invitational at Tom Tellez Track. The one-day event will run on April 6.
