Cougars Add four to roster for 2019-20 season
HOUSTON –The Houston Cougars Women's basketball team and Head Coach Ronald Hughey are excited to announced the addition of Maya Jones, Paris Netherly, Eryka Sidney, and Miya Crump.
MAYA JONES | FORWARD | JONES COMMUNITY COLLEGE/NORTH RANKIN HS
Jones comes to Houston after spending the last two seasons at Jones County Junior College where she averaged 8.1 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, and a team-leading 2.8 blocked shots. In her two years at JCJC, Jones compiled a team-high 85 blocks, helping the Panthers to a 28-3 overall record and the school's third straight MACJC title. In two seasons at JCJC, Jones helped the Panthers to 55 wins.
" Maya Jones reminds me of Serithia Hawkins," says Hughey. "At 6-2, her versatility will be the thing that sets her apart. She's got a three-point shot, can get to the rim, guard multiple players, and drive the basketball. Shes a Mississippi kid with Mississippi hunger. Another thing I love about her is that at junior college she won 55 games in two seasons. She knows what winning requires and will be one of those kids that can lead us."
The Mississipi native ranked third in the NJCAA in blocked shots during the 2018-19 season, notching a season-best 19 points against Mississippi Gulf Coast and posting double-figure efforts in 12 other contests. At North Rankin High School, Jones averaged 15.1 points and nine rebounds per game and was selected for both the MAC North/South All-Star Game and the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game.
PARIS NETHERLY | GUARD | FIU/CROSBY HS
Netherly comes to Houston after spending one season at Florida International where she appeared in 29 games for the Panthers, making 12 starts. During her freshman season, Netherly averaged 5.4 points per game and 4.2 rebounds. Netherly posted a career-high 16 points against FAU and career-high 11 rebounds against UTSA.
"Paris is a big, stong, guard. At 5-11 she can really shoot the ball," says Hughey. "She reminds me of Myyah West with her quiet demeanor, but on the floor she can really fill it up. She can shoot the ball from a distance and is working on getting better at putting the ball on the floor. She can affect the game on both ends of the floor with her rebounding and her lenghth as a defender. Another Houston kid that is coming back home."
The Texas native attended Crosby High School where she averaged 11.9 points per game, earning three rebounds and dishing out 1.7 assists per contest. She helped lead the Cougars to the Texas State semi-finals, earning All-State recognition her junior year. Netherly was named the Newcomer of the Year and earned First Team All-District honors as a sophomore.
ERYKA SIDNEY | GUARD | TEXAS TECH/ WHEATLEY HS
Sidney returns to Houston following a year at Texas Tech where she appeared in 30 games, making 12 starts in her only season with the Lady Raiders. Last season, Sidney averaged 4.2 points per game, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per contest while averaging 20.2 minutes per game. The Houston native became the first Lady Raider to record 15 or more assists in a single game when she had 17 assists against Grambling State last season.
"She is a heady point guard and a great culture kid," says Hughey. " Led San Jac to the first and second rounds of the tournament. She can score, pass, and the best thing about her is that she just a great kid. She loves to be in the gym. She loves to unite her teammates, and she loves to lead as a point guard. She is going to be tremendous for us. She is another Houston kid that is bringing that Houston pride back."
Prior to her time at Texas Tech, Sidney played at San Jacinto College where she was a two-time honorable mention All-American and two-time All-Region First Team selection. During the 2017-18 season Sidney was named to the Region XIV Tournament MVP and led San Jac to back-to-back tournament appearances.
MIYA CRUMP | FORWARD | LAMAR / YATES HS
Crump comes to Houston after spending her freshman season at Lamar where she appeared in 31 games, making 30 starts. The Houston native averaged 14.4 points, to go along with 5.1 rebounds per contest and notched double-figure scoring efforts in 23 games. Crump finished the season second on the team in made three-pointers with 55. At the conclusion of her rookie season Crump was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and earned Second Team All-SLC honors.
"Miya is a long and athletic guard that can play multiple positions," says Hughey. "She can shoot the three, get to the rim and has a pull-up jumper. The thing that makes Miya special is her uncanny ability to score the basketball. She can affect the game on both sides of the ball. She had a really good game against Texas A&M, scoring 20 points and helping them get a win. She is a Houston kid that can't wait to get back."
Prior to Lamar, Crump played high school basketball at Yates High School and was ranked the 17th best prospect in the state of Texas and the second best wing in Texas. Crump earned District MVP honors and First Team All-District honors during her high school career.
