PALM COAST, Fla. – The University of Houston Women's Golf program looks to defend its title when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships on the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Sunday through Tuesday with 18 holes each day on the 6,246-yard, par-72 layout.
The Cougars, who are ranked No 34 in the latest Golfstat national poll, captured the 2018 American Championships title with three student-athletes finishing among the Top-10 leaders.
Megan Thothong led the Cougars at 3-under 213 to finish third while Player of the Year and current senior Leonie Harm finished fourth at 214. Courtney Tibiletti finished seventh with a score of 219.

ABOUT the COUGARS
Under the leadership of two-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Gerrod Chadwell, the Cougars will be represented by Harm, senior Maddy Rayner, junior Amanda Elich and freshmen Hannah Screen and Maria Jose Martinez.
The Cougars have posted four Top-Five finishes in 2018-19 with a team championship at the ICON Invitational on Feb. 25-26 at The Woodlands Country Club.
Harm leads the Cougars with a 71.90 scoring average and 12 rounds of par or better. The Gerlingen, Germany, native has finished among the Top-20 leaders in all eight tournaments in which she has competed this season and recently made history by playing in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Competing in her first collegiate season, Screen ranks second on the team with a 72.92 scoring average and 10 rounds of par or better. The Berkhamsted, U.K., native has posted four Top-10 showings this season, including a fourth-place finish at the ICON Invitational.
PAIRINGS
For Sunday's First Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from UCF beginning at 7 a.m. (CDT) off No. 1.
Harm begins the Championships for Houston at 7 a.m. (CDT) Sunday with Rayner (7:08 a.m.), Elich (7:16 a.m.), Martinez (7:24 a.m.) and Screen (7:32 a.m.) following.

THE AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marks the sixth consecutive season in which the Cougars have competed at the American Athletic Conference Championships, each at Hammock Beach Resort.
The Cougars captured the team title in 2018 and 2016 with third-place finishes in 2017 and 2015. In the program's first year of existence, Houston sent three student-athletes as individuals to the 2014 Championships but were not eligible for the team title per NCAA rules.
Harm will be competing in her fourth straight American Championships, while Elich will play in the postseason event for the second straight season. Martinez, Rayner and Screen will make their American Championships debuts in Sunday's First Round.
UP NEXT
Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate. The NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show will air at 4:30 p.m., April 24, on the Golf Channel.
NCAA Regional competition runs May 6-8 and will be held at the following sites across the nation: Saugahatchee Country Club (Opelika, Ala.); Tumble Creek Golf Club (Cle Elum, Wash.); Forest Akers Golf Courses – West (East Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmie Austin Golf Club (Norman, Okla.).
Each Regional will feature 18 teams and six individuals. The low six teams and the low three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA Championships at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 17-22.
