Cougars tie program record seven stolen bases in victory
Along with the 12 hits, the Cougars (27-15, 4-6 AAC) stole seven bases on the night, which tied a program record for most stolen bases in a game set in 2012. Houston had four players tally multiple-hits in the five-inning contest against the Huskies (15-22, 4-6 AAC), but none bigger than sophomore infielder Tierrrah Williams, who blasted two home runs and tied a career-high five RBIs.
Senior outfielder Maya Thomas, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart and junior infielder Arielle James rounded out those that tallied two hits on the night. Stewart also stole a career-high three bases, as Thomas' three stolen bases tied her career mark.
KEY INNINGS
1st | The Cougars wasted no time showing off their offensive power, as the first three batters in Houston's lineup reached base in the bottom of the first to quickly put the Cougars ahead 2-0. After back-to-back outs slowed the momentum, sophomore infielder Tierrah Williams sent a moonshot over the centerfield wall with junior infielder Arielle James on base to put Houston ahead 4-0 going into the second.
2nd | After senior catcher Brooke Vannoy led the inning off with a triple, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart singled her home to stretch the Cougar led to five. Once James collected her second hit of the day that brought around Stewart, a walk from senior first baseman Savannah Heebner put a pair of runners on for Williams. Williams then stepped up to the plated and hit a rocket past the left field fence to give Houston a 9-0 advantage.
5th | Freshman pitcher Rachel Hertenberger came out of the bullpen to relieve senior pitcher Presley Bell and recorded a perfect fifth inning, having struck out the final two batters she faced to cement the 9-0 win for Houston.
