Cougars host Army in three-game series stating Friday
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to Rice, 5-3, in the opening game of the Silver Glove Series on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars move to 4-7 on the season, while the Owls improve to 6-7.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Rice plated three runs behind a two-RBI double and RBI single in the top of the second.
3rd | Houston got on the board in the bottom of the third. Freshman second baseman Brad Burckel singled to third base, and a throwing error on the play allowed him to advance to third. Senior designated hitter Rey Fuents III plated Burckel on a RBI groundout. Junior left fielder Tyler Bielamowicz followed with a triple into the right-center gap, scoring one pitch later on a sacrifice bunt from senior center fielder Grayson Padgett to make it 3-2.
7th | The first five Owls reached in the top of the seventh. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, before a single and fielder's choice pushed the score to 5-2.
8th | In the eighth, Fuentes III collected Houston's second triple of the game, leading off with a three-bagger into right center. In the next at-bat, Bielamowicz followed with a single up the middle for the 5-3 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Bielamowicz turned in a 2-for-3 effort with a triple, single, walk, RBI and run scored.
• Fuentes III also had a triple to highlight a 1-for-3 effort with one RBI and one run scored.
• Burckel went 1-for-4, collecting Houston's first hit of the game with a single in the third.
Pitching:
• Junior southpaw Spencer Hynes (0-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits across one and two-third innings in his first career start. He walked two and struck out one.
• Senior Nolan Bond tossed four scoreless innings, scattering three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
• Junior Fred Villarreal's streak without allowing an earned run to start the season ended at 13 and one-third innings. Villarreal was taxed for two runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts across one and one-third innings.
• Relievers Tristen Bayless, Ron Brown and Brayson Hurdsman logged the final two innings. Brown retired the two batters he faced to end the top of the eighth, while Hurdsman faced one over the minimum in the ninth.
The Cougars continue their five-game homestand hosting Army in a three-game series starting Friday before closing out with UTSA on Tuesday.
PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
