
Houston Takes Series Opener vs. Army, 6-3

Joe Davis, Blake Way each collect three hits
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team defeated Army, 6-3, on Friday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars improve to 5-7 on the season, while the Black Knights fall to 5-5.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston struck first with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman second baseman Brad Burckel led off with a bunt single and quickly stole second base. Two batters later, Burckel advanced to third on a dropped third strike before a throwing error from first base allowed him to trot home.
2nd | The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the second. Junior left fielder Blake Way opened the frame with a double down the left-field line. After Way advanced to third on a wild pitch, sophomore right fielder Drew Minter delivered Way with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
3rd | Houston doubled its run total with two more runs in the third. Sophomore Kyle Lovelace singled to left center to open the bottom frame. After a strikeout and fielder's choice saw senior center fielder Grayson Padgett trade places with Lovelace. Junior third baseman Jared Triolo reached on a muffed throw by first base, putting runners on second and third before senior first baseman Joe Davis scored the pair with a single to left center.
4th | Army plated one unearned run in the fourth.
6th | The Black Knights added two runs in the top of the sixth to cut it to 4-3. In the bottom frame, Davis turned on the first pitch for a leadoff home run to left field. Way followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Freshman Johnathon Thomas pinch ran for Way and stole second base. Minter plated Thomas with a single to left field for the 6-3 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis finished 3-for-4 with two singles, one home run, three RBI and one run scored.
• Way turned in a career-day, going 3-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
• Burckel, Lovelace and Minter each collected one hit, respectively.
• Triolo reached on an error in the third inning. He has reached base in all 12 games to open the season.
Pitching:
• Junior southpaw Lael Lockhart Jr. (1-2) picked up his first win of the season. The native of Friendswood, Texas, scattered two runs (one earned) on one hit across a career-long five and one-third innings. He walked five and struck out four.
• Junior Carter Henry surrendered one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in a third of an inning.
• Senior Nolan Bond recorded a groundout for the final out of the sixth in his lone batter faced.
• Junior Devon Roedahl tossed the final three innings to record the first save of his career, also Houston's first of the season. Roedahl held Army to two hits while recording no walks and four strikeouts.

The Cougars go for the series win at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.

Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
