Whitting Earns 300th Career Win

Two two-out, RBI singles gives head coach milestone victory
HOUSTON -- University of Houston Baseball Head Coach Todd Whitting picked up his 300th career win as the Cougars defeated Sam Houston State, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the win, Houston improves to 12-11 on the season and takes a 1-0 lead in the Don Sanders Cup, while the Bearkats move to 15-7.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Freshman Derrick Cherry doubled to right center to lead off the bottom of the second. Two batters later, freshman center fielder Johnathon Thomas delivered Cherry with a two-out single up the middle.
5th | The Cougars added another run in the fifth. Burckel led off with an infield single. After advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace, junior third baseman Jared Triolo delivered Burckel with two-out single through the right side of the infield.
6th | SHSU scored one run in the top of the sixth for the 2-1 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Triolo led the team with a 2-for-4 effort with one RBI.
• Thomas finished 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
• Cherry was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.
• Burckel went 1-for-3 with one run scored.
• Junior right fielder Lael Lockhart Jr. also collected a hit in a 1-for-3 effort.
Pitching:
• Sophomore southpaw Clay Aguilar (2-2), pitching on his birthday, picked up his second win of the season. The native of Deer Park, Texas, limited the Bearkats to three hits and one run across a career-long seven innings. Aguilar walked two and struck out five.
• Junior Fred Villarreal closed out the game with two scoreless innings to pick up his American Athletic Conference leading fourth save of the season.
ON DECK
Houston opens a five-game road swing with a Wednesday trip to Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
