
Houston Falls to UConn in Series Finale

Brad Burckel records two doubles; Derrick Cherry hits first career home run
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to UConn, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars move to 11-11 on the season and 1-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Huskies improve to 13-8 and 2-1 in league action.
KEY INNINGS
1st | UConn opened the game with one run in the top of the first. Â
2nd | Freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry tied the game with a leadoff home run to left field in the bottom of the second.
3rd | The Huskies scored five runs in the top of the third to take a 6-1 advantage. In the bottom frame, freshman second baseman Brad Burckel doubled down the right-field line, and the Cougars traded a pair of groundouts to bring him home.
5th | Houston added another run in the fifth. Once again Burckel doubled down the line before coming home, this time on a pair of sacrifice bunts from sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace and senior left fielder Grayson Padgett to make it 6-3.
7th | UConn added two runs in the seventh.
8th | The Huskies tacked on one additional run in the eighth for the 9-3 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Burckel led the team with a 2-for-3 effort recording two doubles.
• Cherry recorded his first career home run and multi-hit game in a 2-for-4 showing.
• Junior right fielder Lael Lockhart Jr. also went 2-for-4.
• Senior third baseman Jared Triolo was 1-for-4.
Pitching:
• Junior right-handed pitcher Devon Roedahl (3-2) suffered the loss. He surrendered six runs (three earned) on five hits across two and one-third innings in the start.
• Junior Brayson Hurdsman relieved Roedahl in the third inning went into the seventh. In total, Hurdsman scattered three hits, one a home run, while walking one and striking out four across four innings.
• Cougar relievers Sean Bretz (0.0 IP), Ron Brown (0.1) and Tristen Bayless (0.1) finished the seventh inning. Bayless struck out his lone batter faced to close the frame.
• Junior Tyler Bielamowicz toed the rubber from the eighth inning into the ninth, being taxed for one run.
• Sophomore Jared Pettitte struck out both batters he saw to end the top of the ninth.

Houston closes its four-game homestand with a 6:30 p.m., Tuesday bout with Sam Houston State at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
