Martinez Leads Houston at Mountainview Collegiate

Freshman shoots 69 in First Round to stand in second; Second Round tees off Saturday morning
SADDLEBROOKE, Ariz. – University of Houston freshman Maria Jose Martinez opened her first MountainView Collegiate appearance with a 3-under 69 to finish in a tie for second after the First Round at The Preserve on Friday.
The Alvarado, Mexico, native tallied her first birdie of the day on No. 3 on the 6,281-yard, par-72 course and picked up another on No. 6 to finish her front-nine at 2-under. A final birdie on No. 14 highlighted her back-nine and propelled her into a tie for second in the individual standings.
Texas State's Geraldine Wong led the MountainView Collegiate at 4-under 68 after the first day. Martinez was joined by Anne-Cha Mora (Texas State), Faith Summers (SMU), Amber Park (Texas A&M) and Rino Sasaki (Washington) in a tie for second.
Freshman Hannah Screen and senior All-American Leonie Harm were tied for 45th at 75. Senior Maddy Rayner was tied for 54th at 76, while junior Amanda Elich was tied for 69th at 78.
Senior Tatiana Pineda is competing as an individual and was tied for 65th at 77.
As a team, the Cougars ended the first round in a tie for ninth-place with 295 on the 6,218-yard, par-72 course.
Texas State held the overall team lead at 282, two shots ahead of UNLV. Iowa State (286), Washington (286) and Texas A&M (288) completed the Top-Five leaders. Oregon State (289), SMU (289), Missouri (292) and Kansas State (295) joined Houston inside the Top Ten.

SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Missouri and SMU beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT), Saturday.
Elich will start the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 10 a.m. (CDT). She will be followed by Rayner (10:08 a.m.), Screen (10:16 a.m.), Harm (10:24 a.m.) and Martinez (10:32 a.m.).
Pineda begins the Second Round at 10:48 a.m. (CDT) off No. 10.
UP NEXT
Following the MountainView Collegiate, the Cougars return to Texas to compete in the Bruzzy Challenge at Lantana Golf Club in Dallas on April 1-2 for their regular-season finale.
From there, the team will head to Palm City, Fla., to participate in American Athletic Conference Championships at the Hammock Beach Resort on April 14-16.
