“Bark in the Park” continues through Sunday’s series finale

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to UConn, 2-1, in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

With the decision, the Cougars move to 10-10 on the season and 0-1 in The American, while the Huskies improve to 12-7 and 1-0 in league play.

KEY INNINGS
4th | UConn plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth.

7th | Houston scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Junior shortstop Kobe Hyland doubled to left center, and freshman center fielder Johnathon Thomas followed with a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Two batters later Thomas stole second base, and a throwing error allowed Hyland to come home for the 2-1 final.

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Hyland finished 2-for-4 with a single, double and run scored.
• Triolo also recorded a double, highlighting a 1-for-4 showing.
• Thomas was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
• Senior first baseman Joe Davis drew two intentional walks, while freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry recorded two walks in his collegiate debut.

Pitching:
• Junior southpaw Lael Lockhart Jr. (1-3) took the hard-luck loss, surrendering two unearned runs across seven and one-third innings pitched. Lockhart Jr. scattered four hits while walking three and striking out five.
• Junior Fred Villarreal retired all five batters he faced, striking out one, to close the game.

ON DECK
Houston looks to even the series in a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.

Fans are invited to bring their favorite K-9 friend, as “Bark in the Park” runs through the entirety of the series at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
