Corey Davis Jr. named to First Team, Armoni Brooks earns Second-Team honors, Nate Hinton selected for All-Freshman Team
HOUSTON – University of Houston Men's Basketball stars Corey Davis Jr., Armoni Brooks and Nate Hinton earned All-American Athletic Conference honors on Monday from the league office.
Davis was a unanimous selection to the league's First Team, while Brooks earned a place on the Second Team. Hinton was a unanimous choice for the All-Freshman Team in voting by the conference's head coaches.
Davis has been a leader for the Cougars throughout his senior season. The Lafayette, La., native leads Houston with 16.6 points per game and is one of Houston's and the league's most prolific 3-pointers, draining 90 treys in 234 attempts for a .385 percentage.
Davis was named to the American Athletic Conference Championship All-Tournament Team a year ago and was selected as the Men Against Breast Cancer Cougar Cup Most Outstanding Player in November after leading the Cougars to wins over Alabama A&M, Northwestern State, Rice and BYU.
He has enjoyed 11 20-point games to date this season and scored a career-high 31 points with six assists in Houston's 85-69 win at No. 20/19 Cincinnati on Sunday. That win clinched the Cougars' first outright regular-season conference championship since 1984.
Like Davis, Brooks is an offensive weapon from long range. With 107 3-pointers this season, Brooks is only the sixth player in school history to drain 100+ treys in a single season and, with 215 in his career, he is only the fifth player to reach 200+.
However, Brooks also leads the Cougars with 6.5 rebounds per contest and is one of only two players to rank among The American's Top-15 leaders in both scoring AND rebounding.
Brooks was honored as the league's Player of the Week for Dec. 3 after scoring 22 points with six 3-pointers in a 65-61 win over No. 18/21 Oregon in the inaugural game inside the Fertitta Center.
This is Brooks' second postseason award from The American. A year ago, he was honored as the league's Sixth Man of the Year.
In his first collegiate season, Hinton has done a little of everything well. The Gastonia, N.C., native ranks fifth on the team with 7.6 points per game and has grabbed 4.5 rebounds per game while competing in all 31 games to date.
Selected as the league's Preseason Freshman of the Year, Hinton has lived up to the hype and showed promising signs of a long, bright future. He scored 19 points with nine rebounds against Memphis on Jan. 6 and was named the league's Freshman of the Week for the first time following that performance.
He enjoyed 11 double-digit scoring games this season and recorded the first double-double of his career with 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the Cougars' dominating 85-69 win over No. 20/19 Cincinnati on Sunday. That win clinched the American Athletic Conference outright regular-season title for the Cougars, a first since the 1984 Southwest Conference.
Shizz Alston Jr. (Temple), Jarron Cumberland (Cincinnati), Jeremiah Martin (Memphis) and B.J. Taylor (UCF) joined Davis on the First Team. Aubrey Dawkins (UCF), Markis McDuffie (Wichita State), Jahmal McMurray (SMU) and Quinton Rose (Temple) joined Brooks on the Second Team.
Dexter Dennis (Wichita State), Jayden Gardner (ECU), Tyler Harris (Memphis) and Alexis Yetna (USF) joined Hinton on the All-Freshman squad.
The league's Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved and Sportsmanship Award winners will be announced Tuesday afternoon with the Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year released Wednesday.
