Davis named league’s Player of the Week, Hinton recognized as Freshman of the Week for second time this season
HOUSTON – Leading the University of Houston Men's Basketball program to its first outright conference title in 35 years, senior guard Corey Davis Jr., and freshman guard Nate Hinton were honored by the American Athletic Conference on Monday in its final weekly awards of the season.
Davis was named the league's Player of the Week for the second time this year, while Hinton was recognized as the Freshman of the Week for the second time in 2018-19.
With wins over SMU and No. 20/19 Cincinnati in the final week of the regular season, the Cougars improved to 29-2 overall record and 16-2 in league play.
Davis led the Cougars with 24.0 points and 5.0 assists per game. The Lafayette, La., native scored 17 points with four 3-pointers, four assists and a steal against SMU inside the Fertitta Center in a Senior Night victory, which clinched a share of The American regular-season title for Houston.
Three days later, Davis enjoyed a career day to lead the Cougars to the first win at Cincinnati in program history, snapping a 16-game road losing streak against the Bearcats.
Davis posted a career-high 31 points with three treys and six assists against Cincinnati. He topped his previous career high of 26 points, set three times in 2018-19 and most recently at ECU (Feb. 27).
In two games last week, Hinton averaged a double-double with 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He was the Cougars' leading rebounder and third-leading scorer with those totals.
Hinton scored nine points against SMU in the regular-season home finale against SMU inside the Fertitta Center.
The Gastonia, N.C., native played a key role in the Cougars' road win at No. 20/19 Cincinnati, which clinched the outright regular-season championship. With 16 points and 11 rebounds, Hinton recorded the first double-double of his career and set a personal best with his rebounding mark.
He connected on 5-of-8 shots from the field, including all four 3-point tries, and drained both free throw attempts.
Shizz Alston Jr. (Temple), Josh Carlton (UConn), Aubrey Dawkins (UCF), Jeremiah Martin (Memphis) and Markis McDuffie (Wichita State) were named to the Honor Roll.
