HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team defeated Army, 9-7, on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars sweep the series and improve to 7-7 on the season, while the Black Knights fall to 5-7.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Army scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Cougars got one run back in the bottom frame. Freshman second baseman Brad Burckel singled in the infield to leadoff and advanced to second on a throwing error. With two outs, senior first baseman Joe Davis plated Burckel with a single to left field.
3rd | The Black Knights had a single and RBI double to leadoff the top of the third, but Houston again scored in the bottom frame. Sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace walked before coming around on a triple down the right-field line from Burckel. Two batters later, junior third baseman Jared Triolo delivered Burckel with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.
6th | Army hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth.
7th | The Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7. With one out, junior Landon Etzel hit a pinch-hit single up the middle. After Burckel walked to put runners on first and second, junior Brett Esau scored Etzel with a pinch-hit single to center field, and Triolo walked. With the bases loaded, Davis hit a two-RBI single to right field, plating Burckel and Esau, while a miscue on the relay in allowed Triolo to come home.
9th | With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Triolo singled through the left side of the infield. After Triolo advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher, Davis walked things off with a two-run home run to right field.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis tied his career-high with four hits in a 4-for-5 showing. The Austin native finished with three singles, one home run, five RBI and one run scored.
• Burckel finished 2-for-4, recording his first career triple and accounting for a career-high three runs scored.
• Triolo went 1-for-3 with a single, walk, RBI and two runs scored. He has reached base in all 14 games to open the season.
• Senior center fielder Grayson Padgett, (1-for-3) Esau (1-for-2), Etzel (1-for-1) and Way (1-for-4) also collected one hit, respectively. Both Esau's and Etzel's base hits came in pinch-hit appearances in the seventh. Pitching:
• Senior right-handed pitcher Devon Roedahl (3-0) picked up his team-leading third win of the season, with all coming out out of the bullpen. The native of Beaumont, Texas, tossed a scoreless ninth, getting out of an error-aided, bases-loaded jam. He finished with two walks and one strikeout.
• Sophomore Clay Aguilar was tagged for four runs (two earned) on four hits in a third of an inning in the start.
• Senior Nolan Bond limited Army to one run on two hits in two and two-third innings to get through the third inning. He walked none and struck out two.
