Cougars score three runs in ninth inning; final out made at wall with bases loaded
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to No. 16 TCU, 10-6, on Friday afternoon as part of the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
With the decision, the Cougars move to 4-4 on the season, while the Horned Frogs improve to 6-2.
KEY INNINGS
1st | TCU struck first with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Â
4th | The Horned Frogs doubled the score via another three-run homer in the fourth.
7th | Junior third baseman Jared Triolo turned on the first pitch of the seventh for a solo home run to left field. However, TCU tacked on three more runs in the bottom frame to take a 9-1 advantage.
8th | Houston plated two runs in the eighth. With one out, senior center fielder Grayson Padgett drew a walk and junior catcher Blake Way singled to center field. After a fielder's choice from freshman second baseman Brad Burckel (Way out on play) put runners at the corners, Padgett scored on a wild pitch. Later in the at-bat, junior designated hitter Tyler Bielamowicz drew a walk, as another wild pitch on ball four allowed Burckel to move up to third base. Triolo then collected his second RBI of the game with an infield single to third base.
9th | The Cougars rallied to score three runs with two outs in the ninth. Senior left fielder Rey Fuentes III doubled to right field. Free passes to Padgett (walk), Way (hit by pitch), Burckel (walk) and Bielamowicz (walk) cut it to 10-5, before Triolo reached on a fielding error by TCU shortstop Hunter Wolfe to make it 10-6. With the tying run at the plate, senior first baseman Joe Davis drove a ball deep into the left-center gap, but TCU center fielder Johnny Rizer made a leaping catch at the wall for the final out.
