Houston Falls Short Against USF at Home

Cougars attempt fourth quarter comeback and fall short
HOUSTON –The Houston Cougars Women's basketball team couldn't dig themselves out of an early hole, falling to USF 59-49 Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center.
Houston struggled offensively for most of the contest, scoring a season-low 49 points in the loss. The Cougars combined for 32.8 percent shooting from the field, making 2-of-11 free throws.
The Cougars fell behind early after USF exploded for a 10-0 run, taking a 16-5 lead heading into the first media timeout. The Cougars would try to answer at the end of the frame with a made three-pointer from Angela Harris and made jumper from Tatyana Hill, but headed into the second quarter trailing 22-10.
USF would widen its lead in the second quarter, allowing the Cougars to score only five points in the frame to take a 38-15 lead at the break.
Houston would attempt to get going in the third quarter, but the USF offense would continue to roll and build its largest lead of the contest at 26 points at the midway point of the frame.
With time winding down Houston would chip away at the USF lead, earning extra possessions and taking advantage of USF miscues. The Cougars would explode for a 9-0 run with under four minutes to play in the game and find themselves withing 10 points. A pair of timely three-pointers from Octavia Barnes would make things interesting, but USF would hits free throws down the stretch and eventually defeat the Cougars.

Houston: The Cougars saw two players reach double figures in scoring, including a team-high 17 from Harris. Barnes added 12 points, including four three-pointers. Hawkins led the team in rebounds with nine and Branch led the team with two assists. Barnes has now hit at least one three-pointer in the last 18 games.
USF: USF finished the game with three players in double figures led by Enna Pehadzic and Elisa Pinzan with 12 points each. Tamara Henshaw led the Bulls with 15 rebounds and Pinzan finished with three assists.
NEWS AND NOTES
Houston will head to UConn for its final regular-season road game on March 2 in Storrs. The game is slate for 12 p.m.
