Cougars roll to seventh-straight win in shutout victory
With the win, the Cougars improve to 11-5 on the season and have won seven games in a row. The shutout against the Owls (5-9) marks the sixth of the year for Houston and its fourth in the last five contests.
At the plate, seniors Rachel Hill and Brooke Vannoy launched their first home runs of the season with their back-to-back shots in the second inning. In the circle, senior pitcher Savannah Heebner tossed her second shutout of the season and 24th of her career, striking out six batters in the process. As a staff, Houston haven't allowed a walk in its past 15.1 innings.
KEY INNINGS
1st | A leadoff walk from junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart put a runner on base and after a sacrifice bunt from freshman outfielder Abby Odenal, the Cougars had a runner in scoring position. With her single through the left side, senior pitcher Savannah Heebner quickly scored Stewart and put the Cougars ahead by one.
2nd | Houston put together back-to-back home runs, as the moon shots launched by seniors Rachel Hill and Brooke Vannoy stretched the Cougar lead to 3-0.
5th | Heebner continued to dominate in the circle, finishing the inning having retired 13 of the past 14 batters she faced. During that stretch, she had also struck out four batters.
6th | Junior infielder Arielle James led the inning off with a walk and following a double down the right field line from freshman catcher Kati Ray Brown, the Cougars were in business with a pair of runners in scoring position and nobody out. A ball put in play from freshman outfielder Bethany Busch caused a fielding blunder from the Owls, resulting in both runners to score for Houston and win the contest 8-0.
