Cougars open road schedule Tuesday at Lamar
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to No. 24 Arizona, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars, who claimed the series with wins on Friday and Saturday, move to 4-3 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 6-2.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Arizona scored two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.
4th | Senior first baseman Joe Davis cut it to a one-run ballgame with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth.
5th | The Wildcats capitalized on four hits and one error to plate seven runs in the fifth.
7th | The Cougars scored two runs in the seventh. Sophomore Kyle Lovelace reached via a one-out hit hit by pitch, and freshman second baseman Brad Burckel singled off the pitcher's hand to put runners on first and second base. In the next at-bat, junior third baseman Jared Triolo delivered Lovelace with a single into the left-center gap, and Davis followed with a double down the left-field line to score Burckel.
8th | Junior Landon Etzel, who entered into the game in the sixth inning, walked to lead off the eighth and advanced around to third base on a pair of groundouts in the infield. He later came home on of a fielding error at first base for the 9-4 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis finished with a solo home run and an RBI double as part of a 2-for-5 showing. His two extra-base hits gives him 86 for his career, while the home run was his 39th overall, both Houston career records.
• Cougars Buckel (1-3, R), Tyler Bielamowicz (1-for-5), Kobe Hyland (1-for-4), Lovelace (1-for-2, 2B, R) and Triolo (1-4, BB, RBI) all collected one hit, respectively. For Lovelace, the base hit marked his first double of the season.
Pitching:
• Junior southpaw Lael Lockhart Jr. (0-1) took the loss, surrendering seven runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts across four and one-third innings in the start.
• Relievers Brayson Hurdsman (2.1 IP), Ron Brown (1.1 IP), Spencer Hynes (0.1 IP) and Nolan Bond (0.2) all turned in scoreless appearances.
• Junior right-hander pitcher Carter Henry also pitched in the game.
ON DECK
The Cougars open their 2019 road schedule with a four-game swing in the third week of the season. Houston visits Lamar in a 6 p.m. tilt on Tuesday, before taking part in the 2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic being held across March 1-3 at Minute Maid Park. PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
