Cougars score season-high 12 runs against Terps
Heading into Sunday's final day of the weekend, the Cougars sit a 4-5 on the 2019 campaign.
On the day, senior outfielder Maya Thomas went 4-for-7 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore infielder Charese Wyatt connected on her first career home run, tallying a career-high four RBIs against Maryland (5-4).
Senior pitcher Savannah Heebner tossed a complete game, three-hitter against the Colonels (6-4), allowing no earned runs in the eight total innings she pitched. She finished the game with eight strikeouts.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | After junior infielder Arielle James drew a walk to put a runner on base, freshman outfielder Abby Odneal moved her over to second to put a runner in scoring position for the Cougars. Sophomore Charese Wyatt then stepped up to the plate and sent an 0-1 pitch over the leftfield fence to quickly give Houston a 2-0 lead.
3rd | The Terps responded right away, connecting on a two-run home run of their own to tie the contest. Maryland then took its first lead of the game with a solo shot to center. In the bottom of the inning, Houston put together a rebuttal of its own, as a two-out RBI single from junior infielder Sarah Queen scored senior catcher Brooke Vannoy, which tied the game at three.
5th | The Cougars' offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning, tallying a total of eight runs off seven hits. Senior outfielder Maya Thomas got things going with a leadoff single and after she advanced to second on a throwing error, she quickly found herself at second base. Thomas came around to score thanks to a single from junior infielder Arielle James. The rally continued for Houston when Wyatt recorded a base hit of her own, scoring Queen and senior outfielder Sarah Barker on the play. Sophomore infielder Aspen Howie joined the hit parade with her single to leftfield that brought around James, making the score 8-4. Once Wyatt scored off a wild pitch, Thomas collected her second hit of the inning, and brought around Vannoy and Howie to push the Houston lead to seven. The 12-4 victory was capped off when Queen singled home junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart with her base hit to left.
