Junior pitcher surrenders just two hits
HOUSTON – Junior pitcher Trystan Melancon threw a complete game victory on Sunday to lead the RV/RV University of Houston Softball team to a 2-1 win over Sam Houston State at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars move to 2-3 on the young season, while the Bearkats drop to 1-4.
On the day, Melancon allowed just two hits and one earned run, while walking two batters in the process. She finished the game with three strikeouts, having retired 14 of the final 15 batters she faced.
Offensively, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart and junior infielder Sarah Queen each recorded a triple on the afternoon. Redshirt senior outfielder Sarah Barker, along with Stewart scored both of Houston's runs.
RV/RV HOUSTON 2, SAM HOUSTON STATE 1
KEY INNINGS
1st | Junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart led things off for the Cougars with a triple over the leftfielder's head and after an RBI single from senior first basemen Savannah Heebner, Houston was quickly ahead by a score.
3rd | After redshirt senior Sarah Barker led off the inning with a bunt, Stewart laid down a perfectly placed bunt of her own to move Barker to second and put a runner in scoring position for the Cougars. Once junior infielder Arielle James advanced Barker to third, a passed ball allowed Barker to cross the plate and put the Cougars in the lead by two.
6th | The defense behind junior pitcher Trystan Melancon was put on display in the top of the sixth, as a sliding grab from Barker and a web gem snag from Heebner kept SHSU off the bases.
7th | A leadoff home run from the Bearkats cut Houston's lead in half, but Melancon bounced back quickly and retired the next three batters she faced to seal the win for Houston.

Houston welcomes Maryland, Nevada, Nicholls State and Louisiana-Monroe to Cougar Softball Stadium, where the five teams will compete in the Houston Classic from Feb. 15-17.
The Cougars' first matchup of the tournament will be against Maryland on Friday, Feb. 15. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
