
Grimes Named The American Player of the Week

Sophomore guard leads Cougars to two wins, averaging 22.5 points, 5.0 rebounds & 3.0 assists per game
HOUSTON – After helping lead the Cougars to a pair of wins, University of Houston sophomore guard Quentin Grimes was honored as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Grimes led the Cougars to a home win over Texas State inside the Fertitta Center and a road win at South Carolina on Sunday afternoon with consecutive 20+-point efforts. The Woodlands, Texas, native led all players with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds with three assists against Texas State on Wednesday.
He followed that with a 24-point performance at South Carolina, thanks to 4-of-7 shooting from the 3-point line. With the Cougars leading 43-31 and 18 minutes remaining in the game, Grimes proceeded to score 16 of the Cougars' next 19 points in leading the team to Houston's first win in Columbia, S.C.
This season, Grimes leads Houston and ranks second in the American Athletic Conference with 17.9 points per game. The College Park High School product also stands sixth in the league with 3.6 assists per contest and is the only player in The American to rank among the Top-6 leaders in both categories.
Wichita State guard Tyson Etienne was named The American Freshman of the Week. UCF guard Ceasar DeJesus, UConn forward Josh Carlton, Memphis guard Alex Lomax, USF guard David Collins and Wichita State guard Jamarius Burton were named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
