Dane Roy Named The American's Co-Special Teams Player of the Year
HOUSTON – Senior punter Dane Roy was selected as the American Athletic Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Year, while Houston tallied four all-conference honors as the league announced its football awards Wednesday.
Roy and junior wide receiver Marquez Stevenson were named to The American Athletic Conference First Team, while senior offensive tackle Josh Jones and junior safety Grant Stuard were selected to the Second Team.
A 2019 finalist for the Ray Guy Award, Roy led the conference and was sixth nationally in punting average (46.9). He helped Houston to a 43.6 net punting average, which led the league and ranked second among all FBS teams. The Bunyip, Australia, native was named The American's Special Teams Player of the Week twice during the regular season.
Roy's 30 punts downed inside the 20-yard line led The American and only two of his 54 punts were recorded as touchbacks. The senior joins former Cougar Demarcus Ayers as the only UH players to win The American's Special Teams Player of the Year award. Roy shared the honor with Memphis wide receiver/kick returner Antonio Gibson.
Stevenson earned first-team honors for the second straight year, leading the Cougars with 52 receptions for 907 yards and nine touchdowns. Stevenson was tied for the third in touchdown receptions among league players, while finishing seventh in receiving yards. The Shreveport, La., native also recorded four 100-yard receiving games this season.
The junior also averaged 27.8 yards per kick return this season, finishing with two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Stevenson's 122.4 all-purpose yards per game ranked fourth in The American in 2019.
Jones started nine games at left tackle for the Cougars and was recently named a First Team All-American by Pro Football Focus. The Richmond, Texas, native allowed just four total pressures in 325 pass-blocking snaps this season. He finished his UH career with 46 starts on the offensive line.
Stuard led the Cougars with 97 total tackles in his first season as a full-time starter. The Conroe, Texas, native finished with four double-digit tackle games this year including a career-high 15 stops at UConn. Stuard also logged 14 tackles at Oklahoma and finished the season first among players in The American with 62 solo stops. He ranked first on the team with 9.5 tackles for loss this year.
Houston has had at least four players earn all-conference honors in every season since 2004.
