Junior forward honored after being named Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Most Outstanding Player
HOUSTON – Leading the University of Houston Men's Basketball team to the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic championship, junior forward Fabian White Jr. was honored Monday as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
White led the Cougars to a semifinal win over Georgia Tech and a championship game victory over No. 21/20 Washington as Houston won its fourth straight game and for the eighth time in the last nine contests.
The Atascocita, Texas, native averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rpg while hitting 52.4 percent (13-of-24) from the field, including all eight free throw attempts.
White posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high-tying 12 rebounds against Georgia Tech. He followed that with a career-high 19 points and two rebounds in the championship game against the Huskies.
For his impressive efforts, he was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. It was the first such honor in his career and made him the seventh player in Houston history to receive that award in a regular-season tournament.
This was the first weekly award of White's career.
Wichita State's Grant Sherfield was named the league's Freshman of the Week. UConn guard Christian Vital, ECU forward Jayden Gardner, Memphis forward Precious Achiuwa, USF guard Ezacuras Dawson III and SMU forward Feron Hunt were named to the Honor Roll.
