Six Cougars score in double digits in 106-42 win over Angelo State
HOUSTON – University of Houston sophomore guard Nate Hinton led all players with 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead six Cougars in double digits in a 106-42 exhibition win over Angelo State in the Fertitta Center on Saturday evening.
The Cougars jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first four minutes and never looked back in the win, leading for all but but the first 11 seconds of the game. Houston connected on 60.0 percent (45-of-75) from the field and limited the Rams to only 25.0 percent shooting (13-of-52).
Houston also outrebounded ASU 49-23 with 15 offensive rebounds and forced 18 Ram turnovers leading to 27 points.
Hinton drained 9-of-16 shots from the field and added three offensive rebounds with three assists and three steals.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman guard Marcus Sasser finished with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc. The Red Oak, Texas, native also dished out five assists with three rebounds and no turnovers in more than 26 minutes.
Like Sasser, sophomore guard Quentin Grimes enjoyed his debut in the Scarlet & White on Saturday. The Woodlands, Texas, native and Kansas transfer finished with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting with two 3-pointers, two rebounds and an assist.
After sitting out as a redshirt in 2018-19 after transferring from Towson, junior forward Justin Gorham posted 14 points with seven rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills added 14 points with five rebounds and four assists in 17 minutes. The Arden, N.C., native joined the Cougars at the semester break in January but did not compete in any games.
Senior center Chris Harris Jr. totaled 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting with four rebounds and a game-high two blocks.
Angelo State guard Paul Williams led the Rams with 14 points, while guard Collin Turner totaled 13 points with a team-high six rebounds.
