The forwards highlight all-conference first and second teams
HOUSTON - Houston Soccer senior forward Desiree Bowen and junior forward Jazmin Grant earned American Athletic Conference regular-season honors, the league announced Tuesday morning.Â
Bowen was tabbed for the All-American Athletic Conference First-Team and Grant was selected for the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team.
Bocanegra on Bowen…
"For the last two seasons, Des has been our most versatile attacker. She has led the team in scoring each year while playing multiple positions. Late this season we moved her into the midfield and she completely changed the dynamics of our attack.  She was on the ball more, was able to make dangerous runs out of the middle and was involved in most of our goals. This honor is well deserved."
Bowen led the Cougars in points, goals and assists, scoring 13 points off of four goals and five assists. She also led Houston in game winning goals and came in third tallying 29 shots on the season. The award marks the third regular-season honor for Bowen, after earning All-Rookie team honors at the conclusion of her freshman season in 2015, and All-Conference First Team honors at the conclusion of the 2018Â season.
Bocanegra on Grant…
"Jaz is one of the most feared forwards in the conference. Her unique combination of speed and strength gives her the ability create a scoring chance in a split second. She often forced other teams to double team her, yet she still found ways to create chances for herself and her teammates. As her soccer abilities continue to mature, her potential is limitless."
Grant continued to be a force for the Cougars, coming off of a breakout 2018Â season. The junior notched 11 points for Houston, tying with Bowen for four goals and collecting three assists. Grant led the Cougars with a career high 20 shots on goal, and posted the second best record with 35 shots. The forward was selected for the American Athletic Conference Weekly-Honor Roll on Oct. 21 for her efforts against a Cincinnati shutout, where she recorded two assists and five shots on the weekend.
In its third season under Head Coach Diego Bocanegra, Houston closed out the season with an overall record of 6-14-0, and for the first time in program history earned a qualifying appearance in the American Athletic Conference tournament.
