HOUSTON – University of Houston senior punter Dane Roy was named one of the 10 semifinalists Monday for the 2019 Ray Guy Award presented by the Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award is given annually to the nation's top punter.
Roy ranks first in The American and is eighth nationally with a 47.3 average per punt. The Bunyip, Austraila, native has had 24 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and leads the conference with 19 punts that have traveled for 50-plus yards this season.
Roy's 47.3 yards per punt average in 2019 would set a Houston single-season record, breaking the mark held by former Cougar Richie Leonie (45.5) in 2012.
The senior has helped Houston to a net punting average of 43.9 yards per punt, which ranks second in FBS. Only one of Roy's 46 punts has been recorded as a touchback.
A team captain, Roy has appeared in 47 games and ranks second in school history with 223 punts for 9,519 yards. He was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List in 2018 and 2019.
He is the first UH punter to be named a semifinalist for the award since Leonie in 2013.
Last week, Roy was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
