Cougars reach milestone with 3-1 victory over Memphis
MEMPHIS, Ten. – The University of Houston Volleyball claimed its 1,000th program victory on Friday night, as the Cougars took down Memphis by a score of 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21).
Houston's historic victory over the Tigers (16-11, 5-10 American) marks the team's 10th conference win this year, which is the most league victories since 2013. The Cougars now sit at 10-5 in The American and hold a 16-14 overall record on the year.
Friday night saw senior libero Katie Karbo inch closer to history, as her 17 digs in the contest puts her five away from the conference's all-time digs record of 2,379 career digs. Karbo was joined by senior outside hitter Claire Karsten as those with 15 or more digs on the night.
While Karbo and Karsten anchored the back row of Houston's defense, freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos led the charge at the net, tallying a match-high 12 blocks. Her night was rounded out with 11 kills, marking the first double-double of her career.
Senior outside hitter Megan Duncan added 11 kills of her own to pace the offense, which was commanded by sophomore setter Kelsey Childers. Childers surpassed the 35-assist plateau for the fourth match in a row, having recorded 10 digs for her third consecutive double-double.
Houston 3, Memphis 1
Set 1
After the Tigers jumped out to an early lead, the Cougars fought their way back to bring the score to within a pair, courtesy of a block from Duncan and sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut. Once another Houston block tied the score at 11, the Cougars went on a 4-1 run to claim a three-point lead and force Memphis to call a timeout. When Theut's first kill of the match extended the Cougars' edge to four, there was no looking back, as a slam from sophomore right side hitter Kendall Haywood sealed the 25-20 set victory for Houston.
Set 2
With Houston holding on to a 10-7 advantage, Memphis scored four of the next five points to tie the score, but Tullos found the floor again to put the Cougars back out in front 12-11. After the Tigers went ahead 17-14, a kill from Theut, followed by a slam from Karten and back-to-back hitting errors from Memphis, gave Houston a one-point lead, forcing the Tigers to call a timeout. The Cougars kept the momentum on their side though, as Houston closed out the set on an 11-2 run to win the frame 25-19 and go up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3
The third set found the Tigers come out to an 11-7 lead and once Memphis went ahead 14-8, the Cougars had to call a break in action. Houston was never able to find its edge again in the set, as Memphis cruised to the 25-16 win to force a fourth set.
Set 4
As the score remained tight to start the final frame, three unanswered points from Houston turned into a huge momentum shift for the Cougars' favor, forcing Memphis to call a timeout trailing 10-7. Once the Tigers managed to tie the score at 16, the Cougars scored five unanswered, which proved to be the difference, as they went on claim the 25-21 set win and 3-1 historic victory.
