Senior libero records 15 digs against SMU to set new mark
DALLAS – University of Houston Volleyball senior libero Katie Karbo tallied 15 digs against SMU to set a new American Athletic Conference all-time digs record with 2,389 digs in her career, but her effort wouldn't be enough as the Cougars fell to the Mustangs in straight sets (16-25, 21-25, 26-28) on Sunday afternoon.
Karbo entered the contest needing just five digs to become the conference's all-time leader, a title that she claimed in the second set. She anchored the back row for the Cougars (16-15, 10-6 American), who posted 58 digs, which is the most this season in a three-set match.
Senior outside hitter Megan Duncan paced the Houston offense with her match-high 13 kills and sophomore setter Kelsey Childers posted 34 assists in the match, marking her fourth match in a row with 30 or more assists.
SMU 3, Houston 0
Set 1
The Mustangs jumped out to the first lead of the contest, but the Cougars climbed their way back into it and tied the score at eight, thanks to a block from sophomore right side hitter Kendall Haywood and freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos. From there, SMU went on an 8-3 run to open up a five-point lead and force Houston to call its first timeout. The break in action wouldn't be enough though to stop the Mustangs' momentum, as they went on to take the first set 25-16.
Set 2
After a kill from freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson brought the Cougars to within a pair at 8-6, a monster overpass kill from sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut capped off a 6-2 run from Houston and put the Cougars ahead 12-10. Once SMU responded with a 6-3 run of its own, there was no looking back, as that proved to be the difference in route the Mustangs' 25-21 set victory.
Set 3
Jackson continued to keep things close for Houston with a kill that brought the score to 5-4, but SMU broke open a four-point lead, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout trailing 12-8. The Mustangs then stretched their advantage to six, yet the Cougars never backed down from the challenge. After rallying off five unanswered points to bring the score to 20-19, Houston eventually tied it all up at 24 and then took a 25-24 lead, courtesy of a kill from freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos. SMU put together a rebuttal of its own though, scoring three of the next four points, to win 28-26 and seal the match victory.
UP NEXT
