Hughey Announces Signing Class

Cougars secure five-person signing class for 2020-21

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team and Head Coach Ronald Hughey will welcome five student-athletes to Houston for the 2020-21 season.
The Cougars secured National Letters of Intent from Laila Blair, Kamryn Jones, Taelor Purvis, Daphane White and Ca'Leyah Burrell.
"Our 2020 signees are really great kids that will be fantastic additions to our Cougar family," says Head Coach Ronald Hughey. "Three of them are Houston kids so it will be great having them represent their hometown right here at UH. The staff did an awesome job evaluating and getting the kids that fit our academic structure, culture, and style of play".

LAILA BLAIR | 5-9 | GUARD | WALLER HS
Blair is a dynamic point guard out of Waller, Texas and is ranked No. 85 overall in the 2020 HoopGurlz Recruiting rankings and 26th in her position. Averaging 24.5 points per game, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists, Blair is a four-star combo guard that will add to the Cougars backcourt. Blair has earned TABC All-Region accolades and is a First-Team All-District selection heading into her senior season.
WHAT HUGHEY IS SAYING: "Laila Blair is an outstanding scoring guard with tremendous work ethic. Her ability to create her own shot is awesome. She knows the game and her style of play fits the speed and style we love to play".

KAMRYN JONES | 6-2 | FORWARD | MAGNOLIA WEST HS
Jones comes to Houston from Magnolia West High School. The 6-2 power forward averaged 10.4 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game and two blocks per contest. Jones enters her senior year having already won District 19-5A Defensive Most Valuable Player honors.
WHAT HUGHEY IS SAYING: "Kamryn is an awesome kid that will bring great energy for us in the paint. Her versatility on the defensive end is uncanny. She has an amazing defensive presence and will develop into a force on the offensive end."

TAELOR PURVIS | 5-9 | GUARD | HIGHTOWER HS
Purvis comes to Houston from Hightower High School where she earned First Team TABC All-State and First Team All-District honors heading into her senior season. The Houston native averages 11.9 points per game, 3.1 assists per game and 3.3 rebounds per game to go along with 2.6 steals per contest.
WHAT HUGHEY IS SAYING: "Taelor Purvis is a great scoring guard that can score the ball in a variety of ways. Her energy and athleticism fits what we do on the defensive and offensive sides of the ball".
CA'LEYA BURRELL | 5-9 | GUARD | JACKSONVILLE JUNIOR COLLEGE
Burrell comes to Houston following a decorated career at Jacksonville Junior College where she averaged 16.3 points, 4,4 rebounds and 1.1 assist per game for the Jaguars during the 2019-20 season. The Texas native played high school basketball at Midway High School in Waco, Texas and will come to Houston with two years of eligibility remaining.
WHAT HUGHEY IS SAYING: "Ca'Leyah's game is smooth, but explosive. she has a dynamic physical stature and presence that makes it easy for her to finish strong through contact. she can create her own shot and is constantly in attack mode. Her three-point shot is incredible and one of the strong attributes to her game. She's not afraid to shoot it and she wants to take the last shot when the game is on the line. she is a solid on-ball defender and we are very excited about her".

DAPHANE WHITE | 6-5 | FORWARD | MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE
White comes to Houston after spending two years at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. This past season she appeared in all 24 games for the XX, averaging a double with 15.7 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per contest. The sophomore racked up 12 double-doubles during the 2019-20 season, including a 20-point, 19 rebound outing against East Central Community College. She was named the eighth NJCAA All-American in MGCCC program history when she was named to the second team. White was a five-star recruit out of St. Martin High School as a member of the class of 2018, earning First Team All-State honors during her senior season. She played for Mississippi in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Classic and was named to the 2018 American Family Insurance All-USA Mississippi Girls Basketball First Team and Player of the Year. The two times Herald Sun Player of the year averaged 25.8 points per game, 14.7 rebounds per game and 5.7 blocks per game in her final season at St. Martin.
WHAT HUGHEY IS SAYING: "Daphane was one of the most dominant post players in junior college this year. She's a great communicator on the floor and an exceptional rebounder and shot blocker. She has tremendous hands, and can finish both around the rim and through traffic. Her offensive game continues to expand amd I'm excited about the next two years of Daphane's development in our program. She definitely has limitless potential".
