PALM HARBOR, Fla. – University of Houston juniors Alexander Frances and Luke Long each fired 69s in the Second Round to finish the first day of the Intercollegiate at Innisbrook in a tie for 12th at even-par 142 on Monday evening.
As a team, the Cougars bettered their First-Round score by 12 strokes and stood in fifth with a total of 572, thanks to an even-par 280 in the afternoon session. Campbell and James Madison were tied for the first-day lead at 562 with Memphis (565) and USF (567) completing the Top-5 leaders.
After opening his tournament with a 73 in the morning, Frances began his Second Round with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15. Following 11 straight pars, the Stege, Denmark, native dropped a stroke with a bogey on No. 9 but quickly recovered with his final bogey of the round on the par-5 11th hole.
Junior Luke Long added his own 69 in the Second Round, thanks to a pair of eagles. The Fayetteville, Ark., native started afternoon play on a tough note, bogeying three of his first five holes.
Fortunately, Long began his back nine with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and added a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole to return to even par. He endured a bogey on No. 7 but ended his day with a birdie on the 10th hole and his final eagle on the 11th hole to join Frances in a tie for 12th at 142.
Senior Logan Young and sophomore Braxton Watkins – competing as an individual – were tied for 15th at 143. Senior George Gardner was tied for 22nd at 144 while playing as an individual, while senior Matt Cole was tied for 30th at 145. Junior Andrew Gibson was tied for 41st at 147.
Maryland's Pete Knade stood atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under 133 to finish two strokes ahead of Isaiah Jackson (Memphis) and No. 98 Pontus Nyholm (Campbell).
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes beginning at 7 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday.
Following the Intercollegiate at Innisbrook, the Cougars head to the Bahamas to play host to the White Sands Invitational starting Friday at Ocean Club. Houston Women's Golf hosted its own tournament at that venue, beginning Monday morning.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from USF and Maryland.
Long starts the day at 7:15 a.m., Tuesday, in the first group off No. 4, with Young (No. first group off No. 5), Frances (second group off No. 5), Gibson (first group off No. 6) and Cole (second group off No. 6) following.

Following the Intercollegiate at Innisbrook, the Cougars join the Houston Women's Golf Team in hosting the White Sands Invitational at Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas on Nov. 1-3.
The Cougars welcome Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia Southern, Illinois State, Louisiana Tech, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Northern Illinois, Samford, SMU, UAB, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.
The Houston women's team hosted their White Sands Invitational, beginning Monday.
