Guard honored as league’s Freshman of the Week for first time in career
HOUSTON – After helping lead the Cougars to a 15-0 record, University of Houston guard Nate Hinton was honored as the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday.
In wins against NJIT, Tulsa and Memphis during the holidays, Hinton finished third among the Cougars with 12.3 points per game but led the team with 7.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest. The Gastonia, N.C., native connected on 46.4 percent of his shots from the field while hitting 90.9 percent from the free throw line.
He led all players with five assists and three steals and added five points against NJIT on Dec. 29 as the Cougars wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 13-0 record.
Opening American Athletic Conference play, Hinton totaled 13 points with a then-career-high-tying eight rebounds and tied for game-high honors with a pair of steals against Tulsa on Jan. 2.
Hinton enjoyed one of the best games in his young career in the Cougars' win over Memphis on Sunday inside the Fertitta Center. The Gaston Day School product posted career highs with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and nine rebounds and added an assist and steal against the Tigers to lead the Cougars to a 2-0 record in league play.
UCF guard Aubrey Dawkins was recognized as the league's Player of the Week. Shizz Alston Jr. (Temple), Kyvon Davenport (Memphis), Jayden Gardner (ECU), Laquincy Rideau (USF) and Jimmy Whitt Jr. (SMU) earned places on the Honor Roll.
