Houston Moves Higher in National Rankings
1/7/2019 4:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Cougars stay at #4 in NCAA NET rankings, rise to #15 in USA TODAY Coaches’ poll & #17 in Associated Press Poll
Fresh off a 90-77 win over American Athletic Conference rival Memphis, the Cougars received 337 points in the USA TODAY Coaches poll to stand at No. 15. Houston earned 565 points to rise to No. 17 in the latest Associated Press poll.
This was the highest the Cougars have been ranked in the AP poll since the 1983-84 team finished the season at No. 5.
As one of only three undefeated teams remaining in the nation, the Cougars remained at No. 4 in the latest NET rankings released daily by the NCAA. The NET rankings replaced RPI as the primary sorting tool for evaluating teams.
The system relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency and qualities of wins and losses.
It was approved in July after consultation with the Division I Men's Basketball committee, National Association of Basketball Coaches, top basketball analytics and Google Cloud Professional Services.
This marked the fifth straight week in 2018-19 and the 135th week in program history that the Cougars were ranked by at least one national poll.
