Houston Joins Fight for Literacy this Weekend

Head Coach Kelvin Sampson & staff to wear green lapel pin and wristband for Sunday’s game vs. Memphis
HOUSTON – University of Houston Men's Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and his 17th-ranked Cougars will help raise awareness about the issue of illiteracy in America and provide support for young children struggling to read in Houston, beginning with this weekend's American Athletic Conference game against Memphis.
The Cougars host the Tigers at 5 p.m., Sunday, inside the Fertitta Center in Coaching for Literacy's Fight for Literacy Game. To raise awareness about the issues connected to illiteracy, Sampson and his staff will wear a green lapel pin and green wristband during Sunday's game.
Fans can support young students in Houston by pledging a donation for each assist recorded by the Cougars in games from Jan. 6-16. Fans can make a pledge by visiting pledgeit.org/cougarsforliteracy.
All funds raised will benefit children who take part in literacy programs in Houston. Fans also are encouraged to sign up to volunteer with local literacy programs by visiting coachingforliteracy.kindful.com/register/volunteer.

ABOUT COACHING for LITERACY
Coaching for Literacy is partnering with more than 50 NCAA programs in this season's Fight for Literacy Games initiative.
Since 2014, partners have helped conduct more than 100 Fight for Literacy Games with more than 50 NCAA teams. Donors across the country have assisted in funding 77 literacy projects, which supported more than 10,000 kids and 500 volunteers in 23 communities nationwide.
The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to use the power of sports to raise awareness about the problem of illiteracy and generate financial support for literacy programs nationwide.
