Cougars suffer first loss of season
Highlights vs. Cornell
HOUSTON-- The University of Houston Volleyball team saw its undefeated season come to an end on Friday, as the Cougars opened up play at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup by splitting their matches with UTSA (6-1) and Cornell (3-2). In their first match against the Roadrunners, the Cougars fell in straight sets (21-25, 23-25, 24-26) but responded in their contest with the Big Red, winning 3-1 (33-35, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23).
GAME 1: HOUSTON 0, UTSA 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –
Houston came out of the locker with another blistering start, scoring the first four points of the match. After a solo block from freshman middle blocker Kendall Haywood, sophomore outside hitter Gabi Zelaya stepped back to the service line and recorded the game's first ace to push Houston's lead to 4-0. Though UTSA went on a 6-2 run from that point to tie the score, the Cougars kept pace with the Roadrunners for the rest of the set, but Houston was unable to reclaim the lead as UTSA won the first frame 25-21.
Set 2 –
After finding themselves in an early three-point deficit to begin the set, the Cougars quickly ignited a 7-1 run to take a 7-4 four lead over the Roadrunners. During that eight-point stretch, junior outside hitter Megan Duncan slammed home three kills, while freshman outside hitter Jordan Lockwood tallied a pair of her own. Once Houston stretched its lead to six courtesy of a kill from sophomore outside hitter Silvia Pertens, UTSA responded by scoring six of the next eight points to narrow the Cougar advantage to 17-15. The Roadrunners inched their way back into the game and tied the score at 21, where they carried their momentum to a 25-23 set victory and 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
In final set that saw a total of 11 ties and five lead changes, the Cougars pushed the Roadrunners about as far as they could. Houston opened up the set with a comfortable lead, but a 7-1 run from UTSA gave the Roadrunners the 12-9 advantage. Once the Cougars fought their back to tie the score at 14, the seesaw battle continued from there, as the two teams found themselves knotted all the way to 24, until UTSA pulled away and took the set by a score of 26-24 to claim the match victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
GAME 2: HOUSTON 3, CORNELL 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –
An emotional first set is how the nighttime matchup opened up, as a combined 68 points were scored between the two teams. After five lead changes and 19 tied scores, Cornell claimed victory in the first frame, winning the set 35-33. Three different Cougars recorded four or more kills in the set, which was led by sophomore outside hitter Gabi Zelaya, who paced the way with six kills.
Set 2 –
The Cougars wasted no time taking that emotion from the first set and carrying it to the second, winning the frame 25-18. Following a strong start to the set from Houston, opening up with a 10-5 lead, Cornell responded having rallied off nine of the next 13 points to tie the score at 14. Thanks to the setting duo of senior Katie Krebs and Abby Irvine, the Cougars paced themselves to a 20-16 lead, where they never looked back from that point to win the set and tie the match at 1-1. At intermission, Krebs and Irvine each had handed out 13 helpers.
Set 3
The third frame began with neither team able to gain an edge on the other, but with the Cougars leading the Big Red 12-11, Houston began to pull away after a service ace from freshman middle blocker Kendall Haywood that stretched the lead to five at 17-12. From there, Cornell called its first timeout of the set, but that was unable to stop the momentum Houston had at that point, as the Cougars went on to win the frame 25-18.
Set 4
A much more tightly contested final frame, the fourth set saw no more than a three-point advantage from either squad, but it was Houston who held on for the final lead. After finding themselves trailing 23-21, the Cougars rallied off four-straight points, which included an exclamation point kill from senior middle blocker Chenelle Walker that sealed the 25-23 set victory and cemented the 3-1 match win.
