Cougars combine to score 10 touchdowns
Against the Tigers (1-3), the Cougars (3-1) finished with 671 yards of total offense, marking the fourth-consecutive game Houston has racked in more than 550 yards of total offense, the only team in the nation to accomplish such a feat.
Junior quarterback D'Eriq King guided Houston's high-octane offense, which has now scored at least 45 points in all its games this season.
The Cougars wasted no time showing off their prolific offense in front of the 29,970 fans, scoring on their first drive of the game for the fourth time this season, courtesy of King taking it himself and crossing the goal line to put Houston ahead 7-0.
Midway through the quarter, King continued to pace Houston with a four-minute twenty-second drive, that resulted in a touchdown to junior wide receiver Keith Corbin, stretching the Cougar lead to 14 points. By the end of the quarter, Houston tallied 116 yards of total offense in just five-minutes and thirty-seconds time.
Houston's offense continued to flex its muscle in the second quarter, putting up the most points it has scored in a quarter all season long with 28. After a one-yard run from junior running back Kevrin Justice extended the Cougar advantage to three possessions, sophomore wide receiver Marquez Stevenson hauled in his first touchdown reception of the game, giving Houston a 28-0 lead.
With the Cougars opening the game with 28 unanswered points, Houston tallied its sixth scoring drive of the season under a minute when junior wide receiver Terry Mark caught his first touchdown of the year to put the Cougars ahead 35-0. The 28-point explosion in the second quarter was capped off when sophomore running back Chandler Smith ran in one of his two touchdowns of the night, sealing the 42-0 lead Houston held at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Houston's offense continued to set the tone, scoring on the first drive of the second half with redshirt freshman tight end Parker Eichenberger recording his first touchdown in a Cougar uniform. Once the Tigers scored their first touchdown of the game at the 6:08 mark, they kept their momentum on defense alive, holding Houston to just seven points in the third frame.
When freshman wide receiver Henry Thomas pulled down the first touchdown of his career to kick things off in the fourth, the Cougars pushed their advantage back to 49 points. Smith then found himself in the end zone for the second time of the night, bringing Houston's lead to 63-7, its largest margin of the game.
After Texas Southern responded with touchdown of its own, freshman running back Kelan Walker broke out for a one-play, 72-yard run that cemented Houston's scoring outburst in their 70-14 victory.
