Award-winning guard becomes second Cougar in as many years to ink NBA contract
HOUSTON - University of Houston guard Rob Gray signed a contract with the NBA's Houston Rockets. General Manager Daryl Morey and the Rockets announced the signing Friday evening.
Gray joined the Rockets during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, competing in two games. Gray became the second Cougar in as many years to sign an NBA contract. Guard Damyean Dotson was taken in the Second Round of the 2017 NBA Draft and competed in 44 games as a rookie.
ABOUT ROB GRAY
Gray enjoyed an award-winning season for the Cougars as a senior in 2017-18 season. The Forest City, N.C, native led the Cougars to a 27-8 overall record and second-place finish in the American Athletic Conference.
After the Cougars received their first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament since 1990, Gray led all players with a career-high 39 points and banked in the game-winning layup with 1.1 seconds remaining in a 67-65 victory over rv/rv San Diego State in the NCAA Tournament First Round on March 15.
Gray averaged a team-best 19.3 points per game to lead the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference in scoring for the second straight season. He joined Houston legend Otis Birdsong as the only Cougars to enjoy multiple conference scoring titles during their careers.
Gray was named to the All-American Athletic Conference, USBWA All-District VII and NABC District 25 First Teams and finished his collegiate career as the eighth leading career scoring in Houston history with more than 1,700 points in three seasons.
He was one of 10 national finalists for the Jerry West Award, presented annually to the nation's top shooting guard, and was a Senior CLASS Award Second-Team All-American for excellence in character, classroom, community and classroom.
By the time his collegiate career had ended, Gray ranked eighth in Houston history with 1,710 points and reached the 1,000-Point Club in 55 games, the 12th fastest time in school history.
Off the court, Gray received his bachelor's degree in sociology in December 2017.
