Third-year coach helped lead Cougars to big turnaround in 2017-18
HOUSTON – Houston Women's Basketball's Vicky Picott has been promoted to the rank of Associate Head Coach, announced Head Coach Ronald Hughey, Tuesday.
“It is an honor to reward Coach Picott with this promotion,” Hughey said. “The hard work and dedication she and this staff have put in during our time on campus has been vital to our success as a program.”
Picott joined the Cougars as an assistant coach prior to the 2016-17 season, and in her two years with the squad, the Cougars have produced tremendous growth with the team's post players. Picott assisted in bringing in junior-college transfers Octavia Barnes and Myyah West, who combined to average 12.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per night.
In addition to the individual growth, Picott helped lead the Cougars to their 12th 20-win season in program history and a berth in the Women's NIT. The WNIT appearance marked Houston's first trip to the postseason since 2010-11.
“It has been a privilege to be part of the University of Houston Women's Basketball program over the past two seasons. Working alongside Coach Hughey and this staff to help develop and serve our student-athletes is a blessing. I would also like to thank DeJuena Chizer and Chris Pezman for all of their support for Coach Hughey and this program. This is a great honor, and I am humbled by this promotion.”
Prior to Houston, Picott served as an assistant coach at Wagner College in New York after spending 11 seasons on the bench at Vanderbilt. During her time with the Commodores, Picott helped lead Vanderbilt to three SEC Tournament Championships, four trips to the Sweet 16 and saw her team finish in the top-25 national rankings eight times.
As a player at Rutgers, Picott left a lasting legacy, graduating in 1992 as the fourth-ranked player in school history in points (1,792) while finishing third in rebounds (1,029). Picott was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Fame on April 26, 1998.
