Cougars to enjoy 11 of 13 games in Houston with Fertitta Center opener against Oregon on Dec. 1
HOUSTON - The University of Houston Men's Basketball program will enjoy 13 non-conference games, including 11 home contests, during the 2018-19 season, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Friday.
After posting a 27-8 record with the program's first NCAA Tournament victory in more than 30 years in 2017-18, the Cougars return seven student-athletes and three starters from that award-winning squad.
Houston will play during the month of November inside Health & PE Arena on the campus of nearby Texas Southern before opening the $60-million Fertitta Center against PAC-12 power Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 1
The Cougars open the season against Alabama A&M on Nov. 10 inside H&PE Arena as part of the four-game Men Against Breast Cancer Cup. From there, Houston will play host to crosstown rival Rice (Nov. 14) in the first meeting against the Owls since 2014-15 before facing Northwestern State (Nov. 19).
Houston closes out the Men Against Breast Cancer Cup at BYU (Nov. 24) and closes out the month against UT Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 28).
Following the Fertitta Center inaugural game against Oregon, the Cougars meet Lamar (Dec. 4) at home before hitting the road to face Oklahoma State on Dec. 8 in Stillwater, Okla.
From there, the Cougars enjoy five straight home games inside the Fertitta Center to close out the non-conference season. Houston plays host to LSU (Dec. 12), Saint Louis (Dec. 16), Utah State (Dec. 20), Coppin State (Dec. 23) and NJIT (Dec. 29) before beginning American Athletic Conference play.

20-GAME WINNERS
The Cougars' schedule features three teams, which won 20+ games a year ago. BYU finished with 24 wins, while Oregon added 23 victories and Oklahoma State finished 21-15.
POSTSEASON TEAMS
Five teams on the schedule competed in postseason play a year ago. Oklahoma State advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals, while Oregon and LSU each advanced to the Second Round of that tournament. BYU and Lamar also enjoyed postseason play in 2017-18.
FIRST-TIME OPPONENTS
The Cougars will meet Alabama A&M, Coppin State and NJIT for the first time in program history this season.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
This season will be the first time the Cougars have played four opponents in more than 25 years.
The Dec. 8 showdown at Oklahoma State will be the first meeting since 1964-65, while the Dec. 20 game vs. Utah State in Fertitta Center will be the first since 1969-70.
The Cougars will face Oregon for only the second time in school history on Dec. 1 inside Fertitta Center and the first since 1970-71. Houston's Nov. 19 meeting against Northwestern State will be the first since 1988-89.
ABOUT THE FERTITTA CENTER
With a capacity of 7,100, the Fertitta Center will feature a premium club and courtside club as well as a reconfigured bowl with mid-court seating closing to game action. The facility also includes floor-level seating opposite the team benches for UH students.
The University also will transform an area adjacent to the Fertitta Center into Hofheinz Pavilion, where fans will be greeted by a bronze statue of former Harris Country Judge Roy Hofheinz.
The renovation was made possible through a generous $20-million donation from University of Houston System Board of Regents Chairman Tillman J. Fertitta and his family in 2016.
