HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior thrower Taylor Scaife stole the show for the Cougars after demolishing her own school record in the hammer throw. Scaife became the first woman in Houston history to throw the hammer more than 200 feet, posting a top throw of 203-9 (62.10m). The mark tops Scaife's previous school record of 195-6 (59.60m) set a week ago at the Texas Relays and moves her to No. 16 in the nation.
Freshman Jennifer Ramirez also set a personal best in the event after her top throw of 154-7 (47.11m) placed her sixth.
In a first day that was full of field action, the Cougars picked up a pair of top-5 finishes in each of the first two events. For the men, senior Jose Herrera tallied a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw with a top-mark of 175-10 (53.60m). Multi-athlete Cassie Leal followed with a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 122-2 (37.24m).
Multi-athlete Luke Barksdale closed the day of field action for the men with a third-place finish in the javelin. Barksdale's second attempt traveled 150-0 (45.72m) to set a new personal best.
A pair of women finished the afternoon for the Cougars in the pole vault. Sarah Howe and Olivia Winterkamp each went up-and-over the bar at 11-1.75 (3.40m), however Howe cleared on her second attempt to finish third, while Winterkamp went over on her third attempt to take fourth.
