HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball split its doubleheader with No. 19/20 Baylor, falling 1-0 in nine innings and winning 4-3 on Tuesday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the split, the Cougars move to 30-18 overall, while the Lady Bears slide to 30-14. With 30 victories, Houston's ties last season's win total with six games remaining in the regular season.
Freshman designated player Aspen Howie led the team offensively, going 3-for-6 across the doubleheader. In the first game, Howie and teammates Arielle James, Sarah Queen and Maya Thomas all hit safely. In the second game, she finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Queen also doubled in the nightcap.
In the circle, sophomore Trystan Melancon and junior Savannah Heebner each tossed complete games.
Melancon took the hard-luck loss in the first game. She scattered six hits, surrendering the lone run of the game on a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth inning, while walking one and striking out seven. Melancon carried a perfect game through four and one-third innings.
In the night game, Heebner worked around three runs on nine hits with no walks and four punchouts to improve to 20-8. The victory marked the 44th of her career and moves her into a tie with Diedre Outon (2011-14) for fifth all-time in program history.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | Queen doubled into the left-center gap to lead off the bottom of the second. In the next at bat, Howie mirrored her with a double into the right-center gap before coming around on a sacrifice bunt from Thomas and sacrifice fly from junior catcher Brooke Vannoy to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
4th | Houston doubled its lead with two more runs in the fourth. Vannoy walked and advanced around to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore first baseman Kelli Montgomery and passed ball, before scoring on a single up the middle from sophomore center fielder Lindsey Stewart. Two batters later, senior left fielder Kaylin Crumpton doubled down the right-field line to plate Stewart and make it 4-0.
6th | Baylor scored three runs in the sixth for the 4-3 final.

The Cougars return to American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at UConn starting Friday.
COUGAR SOFTBALL STADIUM UPGRADES
Thanks to a record year for the Diamond Club, Houston Softball announced the addition of an LED, Daktronics video board (completed) and indoor practice facility as major upgrades to Cougar Softball Stadium.
According to Daktronics, the new outfield video board is the fifth largest at an on-campus softball stadium in the country and the largest in the state of Texas. The board, which sits just beyond the left-field wall, stands 29-feet-3.1-inches tall and measures 24-feet-4.0-inches wide with 576 square feet of space (24-feet by 24-feet) for live video, instant replays, statistics and scoring information, graphics and animations, and sponsor messages. The display features a 13HD pixel layout for crisp, clear imagery for a great view from every seat at the stadium.
The indoor facility, which will replace the current batting cage down the right-field line, will measure 70-feet by 80-feet. The 5,600-square-foot space will feature five batting cages, measuring 60-feet long by 15-feet wide each, with retractable nets for the space to be used in a variety of ways. The facility will have a synthetic turf floor and will be temperature controlled.
In total, the two capital projects represent $1.2 million in upgrades.
